CIM – The “Clipper” Round the World Race – A Marketing Experience
The Clipper Race was conceived in 1995 by Sir Robin Knox Johnston and together with William Ward they founded Clipper Ventures to run the race. The event gives paying amateur crew members the chance to sail round the world. In 2000 the race took on The Times newspaper as title sponsor and for the first time the yachts were backed by UK cities.
This concept has been expanded with the race now generating one of the highest returns on investment for sponsors compared to other sailing events. The City of Derry-Londonderry is now half way through a three race sponsorship programme with Clipper Ventures. This sees Derry sponsoring a boat and hosting the race on a stopover that has become an internationally renowned maritime festival. The Clipper Race marketing team will talk about the history of the race and their experience in developing a worldwide brand. The event will take place on the quayside in view of the Clipper Race Fleet that will be in port during the Legenderry Maritime Festival.
This is an opportunity to learn first-hand about the experience of building an international branded sporting event and at the same time experience the excitement of the Clipper Race stopover and the Legenderry Maritime Festival
